History and Mythology: The Five Elements
The name “Ngu Hanh Son” was bestowed upon the mountains by King Minh Mang of the Nguyen Dynasty in 1837. Each of the five peaks represents one of the fundamental elements of Oriental philosophy:
- Thuy Son (Water): The highest and most famous peak.
- Moc Son (Wood): Home to the unique “Rooster” rock formation.
- Hoa Son (Fire): Comprising two distinct peaks.
- Kim Son (Metal): Famous for the Quan Am Pagoda.
- Tho Son (Earth): The lowest peak with historical war shelters.

1. Huyen Khong Cave
This is arguably the most breathtaking cave in Central Vietnam. Natural skylights in the cavern’s ceiling allow shafts of sunlight to pierce through.
