Ha Long Bay Travel Guide 2026

10 min read Updated December 2025 Halong Bay, Vietnam

Why Visit Ha Long Bay?

Ha Long Bay is Vietnam’s most iconic natural wonder — 1,969 limestone karst islands rising dramatically from emerald-green water in the Gulf of Tonkin. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, it remains one of the world’s most photographed seascapes. The most popular way to experience it is on an overnight cruise, sleeping on the water surrounded by the towering limestone formations.

Ha Long Bay is 170km east of Hanoi (3.5 hours by road). Most visitors join a 2-day/1-night or 3-day/2-night cruise departing from Ha Long City or the newer cruise port at the Tuan Chau Marina.
