Halong Bay Budget Guide: How to Visit for Under $100

10 min read Updated December 2025 Halong Bay, Vietnam

Halong Bay is often seen as a luxury destination, with $500-per-night private suites and seaplane transfers. However, you don’t need a fortune to witness this geological marvel. With a bit of planning and insider knowledge, you can experience the bay for under $100 per person—including transport and tours.

1. Day Trip vs. Overnight Cruise

The easiest way to save money is to opt for a Deluxe Day Cruise instead of an overnight one. A high-quality 6-hour day trip costs between $50 and $70, whereas the cheapest overnight cruises usually start at $120.

If you choose a day trip, ensure it is a “6-hour” or “8-hour” route (Route 2), which visits the same famous spots as overnight boats, such as Sung Sot Cave and Titop Island.

2. Getting There: Skip the Private Car

While private transfers from Hanoi can cost $80+, you have much cheaper options:

3. The Cat Ba Island Alternative

This is the “pro-tip” for budget travelers. Instead of staying in expensive Halong City, head to Cat Ba Island. Hostels here are as cheap as $7 - $10 per night.

From Cat Ba, you can take a Lan Ha Bay day tour for roughly $25 - $35. This usually includes kayaking, lunch, and a visit to Monkey Island. It is often considered more beautiful and far less touristy than the main Halong Bay routes.

4. Eating on a Budget

Avoid the “tourist restaurants” along the Bai Chay beach front. Instead, head to Hon Gai (the local side of Halong City). You can find incredible seafood noodle soup (Bun Haisan) or Banh Mi for $1.50 - $3.00.
